{"id":102,"date":"2018-08-19T15:27:25","date_gmt":"2018-08-19T15:27:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/?page_id=102"},"modified":"2021-07-15T09:09:26","modified_gmt":"2021-07-15T09:09:26","slug":"brown-willy-2018","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/english-summits\/brown-willy-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Brown Willy 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>G\/DC-002 \u2013 The Long Way Round<\/h2>\n<p>On the Sunday I decided to have a go at Brown Willy up on Bodmin Moor.\u00a0 Initially I planned to tackle it from the South following\u00a0G4OBKs 2015 route.\u00a0 I plugged the postcode into the satnav and set off to find the parking spot.\u00a0 As soon as I got away from the coast and gained some height around St Austel I was into thick fog.\u00a0 Approaching the parking spot from the South West the postcode I had took me along the A30, straight past the planned start and onto the next turning beyond.<\/p>\n<p>As this was beyond the edge of my map I struggled to find the correct parking and start but eventually found what I thought must be it.\u00a0\u00a0I parked the car and prepared to kit up for the days walk but\u00a0immediately\u00a0realised that I had forgotten to load my walking boots. Doh..<\/p>\n<p id=\"WYzfydJ\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/english-summits\/brown-willy-2018\/img_5b8d832893460\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1139\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1139\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5b8d832893460.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"541\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5b8d832893460.png 541w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5b8d832893460-300x198.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 541px) 100vw, 541px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I set off anyway in my trainers but pretty soon realised things were not right.\u00a0 Fortunately I soon came across a path closure notice with a location map and from this I worked out that I was definitely in the wrong place.\u00a0 At this point I got the message that this was not to be so turned around and headed back to the car.\u00a0 Fortunately I had also brought maps and a postcode for the Northerly approach as an alternative option so I plugged this into the satnav which said it was only about five miles away, I decided having got this far I may as well at least have a look at it.\u00a0Shortly after I started driving the satnav changed it\u2019s mind and told me it was actually about 20 miles away.\u00a0 Ah well, at least the scenery would be pleasant if only the fog would lift!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/english-summits\/brown-willy-2018\/img_5267-150x150\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1140\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1140\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5267-150x150-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5267-150x150-1.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5267-150x150-1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>Parking on the Northern approach is great.\u00a0 There is a proper car park with room for about 50 cars located at SX 138 819.\u00a0 From here there is a good track for a little way and on a clear day I think it would be possible to follow the track all the way to the summit, but with the thick fog I was unable to see where the track led at each twist and turn and as the track is not marked on the map I was forced to navigate by compass alone.<\/p>\n<p id=\"WmteZVO\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/english-summits\/brown-willy-2018\/img_5b8d90529e3cf-768x724\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1142\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1142\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5b8d90529e3cf-768x724-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"724\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5b8d90529e3cf-768x724-1.png 768w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5b8d90529e3cf-768x724-1-300x283.png 300w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5b8d90529e3cf-768x724-1-685x646.png 685w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I took a fairly straight line towards the summit which was a mistake.\u00a0 Reaching the river at\u00a0SX 153 806 it was easy enough to cross but the ground on the other side is very difficult.\u00a0 There is a proper crossing a little to the South which is what I should have headed for.\u00a0 From that crossing there is a good path up to the summit which I followed on the way back down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/english-summits\/brown-willy-2018\/img_5266-e1536003485743-169x300\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1143\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1143\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5266-e1536003485743-169x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Reaching the summit eventually, still in thick fog, the wind was strong over the summit making setup difficult.\u00a0 The aerial ended up pointing down under more than to the North East where I wanted it.<\/p>\n<p>It took me a while to get the contacts, radio amateurs are sparse down in these parts, but I did eventually get the four I needed before packing up and returning to the car.
