At Beck Head turn right up much steeper and broken ground.\u00a0 The path is not so easy to find here, try and keep more to the right.\u00a0 The top of Great Gable was in cloud when I arrived and above about 800m the rock was all covered in a thin layer of verglas making passage tricky at times.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_821\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-821\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/english-summits\/great-gable-and-kirk-fell-2018\/img_5472-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1057\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1057\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5472-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Great Gable summit plateau<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The summit plateau was quite surreal with extensive frosting and poor visibility, it was more like a moonscape.<\/p>\n<p>Once again I managed to make the contacts without setting up the beam.\u00a0 I stood on top of the summit cairn and soon had\u00a0 six contacts in the log.<\/p>\n<h3>G\/LD-005 Log<\/h3>\n<p id=\"rdyEjKL\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/english-summits\/great-gable-and-kirk-fell-2018\/img_5c1cece1e5003\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1058\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1058\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5c1cece1e5003.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"135\" (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dropping off the summit\u00a0back\u00a0down to Beck Head I managed to find an easier route down and was soon back at the col.<\/p>\n<h2>G\/LD-014, Kirk Fell \u2013 802m, 8 Points<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_823\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-823\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/english-summits\/great-gable-and-kirk-fell-2018\/img_5474-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1059\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1059\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5474-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beckhead Tarn frozen solid<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From Beck Head it is an easy route West up onto Kirk Fell.\u00a0 The ground gets steep in places but nothing of any difficulty.\u00a0 The summit plateau was in the clouds when I arrived so visibility was poor.\u00a0 Note there is a small false summit before reaching the main summit proper.\u00a0 As I arrived at the summit I heard Mark M0NOM calling from the summit of\u00a0G\/LD-050 Gummer\u2019s How so I grabbed the mic and managed to quickly get a summit to summit contact in the log.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_824\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-824\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/english-summits\/great-gable-and-kirk-fell-2018\/img_5477-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1060\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1060\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5477-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-824\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kirk Fell summit shelter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There is a nice summit shelter at the top so I set up here to make another six contacts, once again all using just the Nagoya antenna with 5w from the HT.\u00a0 With the successful activation in the bag it was time to head back down.\u00a0 There is a path on the map South West straight down the nose of Kirk Fell.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_826\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-826\"><a \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The path down the nose of Kirk Fell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I had seen is from below on the walk in and knew it was going to be steep, but as the weather was not too bad I decided to try it anyway.\u00a0 It was steep but perfectly passable.\u00a0 I am not sure I would like to come up that way though as there is a lot of loose scree to cross.<\/p>\n<h3>G\/LD-014 Log<\/h3>\n<p id=\"aBLTiRc\"><a
