{"id":251,"date":"2017-10-08T13:46:55","date_gmt":"2017-10-08T13:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/?page_id=251"},"modified":"2021-07-15T15:44:10","modified_gmt":"2021-07-15T15:44:10","slug":"fan-brycheiniog-2017","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/fan-brycheiniog-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Fan Brycheiniog 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>GW\/SW-003 \u2013 A new approach<\/h2>\n<p>Fan Brycheiniog was the last of the 8 point SOTA summits in the Brecons I had still to do in 2017 so on a bright sunny October morning we set sail for a north westerly approach past Llyn Y Fan Fach.\u00a0 Compared to last week on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/fan-fawr-2017\/\">Fan Fawr<\/a>\u00a0it couldn\u2019t have been more different.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_97\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/fan-brycheiniog-2017\/img_4848-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1425\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1425\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_4848-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-97\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking up towards Fan Foel with the Pant y Bwlch pass to the right<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Arriving at the car park, it was fairly full but there were still a few places to be had.\u00a0 \u00a0After some initial confusion establishing exactly where we were on the map we set off south along the obvious track towards the lake.\u00a0 At the filter beds, rather than following the westerly route up\u00a0around\u00a0the lake we chose to strike\u00a0off cross country to find the more challenging route up through the Pant y Bwlch pass.\u00a0 This should only be tried if you are confident on steep ground and the weather is appropriate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_99\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/fan-brycheiniog-2017\/img_4850-e1507729077484-169x300\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1427\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1427\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_4850-e1507729077484-169x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-99\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The path up the Pant y Bwlch pass<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From the top of\u00a0Pant y Bwlch there is a clear path following the edge of the summit plateau, around Fan Foel, past the summit cairn and onward to the trig point marking the highest spot on Fan Brycheiniog at 802m asl.<\/p>\n<p>The view from the trig point on a clear day is incredible.\u00a0 We set up the station next to the trig point on the edge looking out over Llyn y Fan Fawr with a clear takeoff to the north east.\u00a0A quick call on the FM calling channel was rewarded immediately with a number of stations coming back.\u00a0 We moved of to S18 where I worked through the mini pileup.\u00a0 In the next hour I worked 17 stations from locations as diverse as Southern Ireland, Manchester and Stockport including two S2S contacts, one into the Lake District and the other in the West Midlands.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_102\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/fan-brycheiniog-2017\/fan-brycheiniog-route-300x194\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1428\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1428\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Fan-Brycheiniog-route-300x194-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-102\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tracklog showing the route taken<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For the return route we decided to track cross country straight across the plateau heading for Picws Du.\u00a0 There is a faint path most of the way which is fine in good visibility.\u00a0 Back at the pass we elected to take in the summit of Picws Du as a bonus so headed up and over the top.\u00a0 Again to be rewarded with glorious views over the lake and beyond.\u00a0 The path back down this way is fairly clear and close to the steep drop back down to the lake.<\/p>\n<h3>Journey Details<\/h3>\n<p>Date \u2013 8th October 2017<\/p>\n<p>Postcode \u2013 SA19 9UN<\/p>\n<p>Parking \u2013 SN 799 238<\/p>\n<p>Radio \u2013 Kenwood TH-D74 + 50W PA on 2m<\/p>\n<p>Antenna \u2013 2 ele dipole<\/p>\n<p>Band \u2013 144 FM<\/p>\n<p>Contacts \u2013 17<\/p>\n<p>SOTA points \u2013 8<\/p>\n<p>Group \u2013 Myself &amp;
