{"id":279,"date":"2018-01-06T14:36:24","date_gmt":"2018-01-06T14:36:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/?page_id=279"},"modified":"2021-07-15T14:47:41","modified_gmt":"2021-07-15T14:47:41","slug":"fan-fawr-pen-y-fan-2018","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/fan-fawr-pen-y-fan-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Fan Fawr &#038; Pen Y Fan 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>GW\/SW-005 &amp; GW\/SW-001- Been here before<\/h2>\n<p>Another early start to try and get into the car park before the crowds.\u00a0 Arrived at 8:45 but already the car park was full and they were parked down both sides of the main road.\u00a0 Ended up parked in a pile of mud a quarter of a mile down the road from the Storey Arms.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/BB-MWI-WM11430_2018-01-05_133705_0380000.pdf\">Weather<\/a>\u00a0was meant to have been reasonable but as usual Fan Fawr top was missing in the cloud.\u00a0 There was another of the interminable races one again but this one was going up Pen Y Fan today so at least it was quiet on Fan Fawr.<\/p>\n<p id=\"sEKlCLB\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/fan-fawr-pen-y-fan-2018\/img_5a53403fcdf5c\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1333\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1333\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a53403fcdf5c.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"729\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a53403fcdf5c.png 729w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a53403fcdf5c-300x191.png 300w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a53403fcdf5c-685x435.png 685w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I tried to follow the path up as usual but soon lost it in the murk so ended up aiming for the steep ground then using the aspect of slope approach to find the path up.\u00a0 The ground was frozen solid which made the steep section of the path interesting. Instead of the usual grippy mush it was more like polished ice. In places I had to abandon the path and clamber up the grass.\u00a0 Wished I had brought the ice axe!<\/p>\n<p>Summit was deserted.\u00a0 Wind was blowing across gusting up to about 30mph making it very cold with the wind chill.\u00a0 I set up just beyond the cairn and pulled out the two man shelter to operate from.\u00a0 I soon made the required four contacts.
