{"id":298,"date":"2018-02-04T15:16:40","date_gmt":"2018-02-04T15:16:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/?page_id=298"},"modified":"2021-07-15T12:26:49","modified_gmt":"2021-07-15T12:26:49","slug":"craig-y-llyn-mynydd-carn-y-cefn-and-coity-mountain-2018","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/craig-y-llyn-mynydd-carn-y-cefn-and-coity-mountain-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Craig y Llyn, Mynydd Carn-y-cefn and Coity Mountain 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>GW\/SW-010, GW\/SW-014 &amp;\u00a0GW\/SW-012 \u2013 At last, a sunny day<\/h2>\n<p>It was still dark on Sunday morning when I left home.\u00a0 Three new summits today, none of which I have ever been up so a bit of a challenge.<\/p>\n<h3>GW\/SW-010, Craig y Llyn<\/h3>\n<p>Arriving at the viewpoint below Craig y Llyn at about 8:30 am I decided it was too public a spot to park up for the ascent so I continued on along the road to\u00a0SN 923 027 where there is room for a couple of cars to park, in not such an obvious place.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ultDqaj\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/craig-y-llyn-mynydd-carn-y-cefn-and-coity-mountain-2018\/img_5a7b09a943d11-768x333\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1268\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1268\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a7b09a943d11-768x333-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a7b09a943d11-768x333-1.png 768w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a7b09a943d11-768x333-1-300x130.png 300w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a7b09a943d11-768x333-1-685x297.png 685w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The path marked on the map across Ffos Toncenglau is not there on the ground.\u00a0 I tried to follow it but it was a big mistake.\u00a0 The ground is boggy and covered in long coarse tufty undergrowth, the sort that is a nightmare to cross.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/craig-y-llyn-mynydd-carn-y-cefn-and-coity-mountain-2018\/img_5025-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1269\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1269\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5025-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By the time I was half way across I decided to make for the northern boundary and pick up the track. Progress along the track was a lot easier although it is very badly rutted by motorbikes and off roaders.\u00a0 The views over Llyn Fawr make up for the poor terrain though so don\u2019t be put off.\u00a0 Once on the track it is a straight forward route up to the summit with very little ascent.\u00a0 The only challenge is knowing where to find the summit trig point which requires a bit of astute navigation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/craig-y-llyn-mynydd-carn-y-cefn-and-coity-mountain-2018\/img_5028-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1271\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1271\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5028-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The actual trig point is set a little way back from the edge and is now surrounded by trees so I decided to set up the station back on the main track which had a clearer takeoff.<\/p>\n<p>I soon had seven contacts in the log which cleared the pileup so as I still had two more unknown peaks to complete I decided not to wait around. On the return I checked the route across\u00a0Ffos Toncenglau from the high ground above it and thought I could make out the path but when I got down to the corner where it meets the track it didn\u2019t look any better so instead I returned along the track to the road and then along the road back to the car. All the previous logs I have read seem to have approached this one from the North, generally starting from the West Monmouthshire Golf Course.\u00a0 I decided that as I would be short of time I would try the shorter route in from the Blaina side.<\/p>\n<p id=\"kYBWFkk\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/craig-y-llyn-mynydd-carn-y-cefn-and-coity-mountain-2018\/img_5a7b135d9c61a\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1274\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1274\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a7b135d9c61a.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"759\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a7b135d9c61a.png 759w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a7b135d9c61a-300x142.png 300w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a7b135d9c61a-685x324.png 685w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finding a parking spot was the first problem.\u00a0 These are very narrow roads and it\u2019s not clear exactly where to start walking from.\u00a0 There is room for a couple of cars on the side of the road around\u00a0SO 196 084 which is just below the radio tower.\u00a0 From there I hunted around looking for a path up through to the hil.\u00a0 There are a number marked on the map, eventually I found a way through at the southern end of the woods to the south of the radio tower.\u00a0 Once through the woods it is an easy route up the hill until you reach the access land where it becomes quite steep at\u00a0SO 192 081.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_462\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-462\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/craig-y-llyn-mynydd-carn-y-cefn-and-coity-mountain-2018\/img_5035-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1275\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1275\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5035-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-462\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking back down the hill at Llanerch-y-pant<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There is a stile on the right here which looks like it goes the wrong way but in fact leads to another stile and an easier route up the steep section of the hill.\u00a0 In the event I went straight up the hill following the route of the path marked on the map.\u00a0 This is a very steep grassy route which I would not attempt again, especially if it was wet.\u00a0 Once on the top there is a clear track, badly cut up by off roar bikes a few of which were buzzing around whilst I was up there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/craig-y-llyn-mynydd-carn-y-cefn-and-coity-mountain-2018\/img_5039-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1276\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1276\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5039-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The trig point is not visible from the track so to find it I took a back bearing from the radio mast and walked along the track until I was on this bearing.\u00a0 Then it is a short walk to the top and the trig point.<\/p>\n<p>I set up the station at the trig point using the hole in the top to support the mast.\u00a0 It was a fairly cold and windy activation with occasional flurries of snow in between the sunny spells. Again I took an unusual approach to the hill.\u00a0 Other logs I have read have started from the Eastern side of the mountain, generally from the Big Pit mining museum.\u00a0 That is a shorter walk but a longer drive from the last one so swings and roundabouts.<\/p>\n<p id=\"lDDfAsc\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/craig-y-llyn-mynydd-carn-y-cefn-and-coity-mountain-2018\/img_5a7b2799c7322\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1279\"><img sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is good parking at\u00a0SO 218 061 which appears to be a visitor resource\u00a0or there is room for a couple of cars at\u00a0SO 220 066 if you want to save a bit of walking.<\/p>\n<p>The route up to the access land is fairly obvious but once onto the access land I headed South then turned East up the flank of the hill.\u00a0 There is no obvious path up this was so I would avoid it next time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_469\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-469\"><a sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spot the summit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The track to the North and then South East up the other flank of the valley is a much better option.\u00a0 From the crossing marked 504 on the map head North and then pick your spot to head into the wilderness looking for a summit.\u00a0 I picked a spot at random that was showing as within 2 metres of the summit on the altimeter so very much within the activation zone.\u00a0 I set up the station of the clearest bit of ground I could find, when I checked later I was about 180m from the marked summit on the map.\u00a0 For the third time I made seven contacts to clear the pileup.<\/p>\n<h3>GW\/SW-012, Coity Mountain Log<\/h3>\n<p id=\"lRHPNtZ\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/craig-y-llyn-mynydd-carn-y-cefn-and-coity-mountain-2018\/img_5a7b2a8c267f0\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1282\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1282\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5a7b2a8c267f0.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"507\" height=\"149\"
