{"id":371,"date":"2019-02-16T23:18:14","date_gmt":"2019-02-16T23:18:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/?page_id=371"},"modified":"2021-07-14T15:59:45","modified_gmt":"2021-07-14T15:59:45","slug":"carnedd-llewelyn-pen-llithrig-y-wrach-2019","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/welsh-summits\/carnedd-llewelyn-pen-llithrig-y-wrach-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Carnedd Llewelyn &#038; Pen Llithrig y Wrach 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The weather looked promising for this activation of two new summits for me.\u00a0 This is a route that is overshadowed by it\u2019s more illustrious neighbours to the South but it is well worth doing, offering a mix of just about everything Snowdonia has to offer terrain wise and 22 SOTA points as well.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-917\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5c6d34641277b.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"761\" height=\"693\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5c6d34641277b.png 761w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5c6d34641277b-300x273.png 300w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5c6d34641277b-685x624.png 685w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 761px) 100vw, 761px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Parking is easy at the Gwern Gof Isaf campsite at\u00a0SH 685 601.\u00a0 Pop in and pay the farmer his \u00a32 and for your money you will receive a days parking and some great local advice on conditions and the route.<\/p>\n<h3>GW\/NW-002, Carnedd Llewelyn \u2013 1064m, 10 Points<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-918\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5541-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/>Cross the road to the obvious track heading NE.\u00a0 Follow this to the bend where you will see the remains of a building on the right.\u00a0 Turn here. Initially there is not much sign of the path but you should soon pick it up, it becomes more obvious as you approach the reservoir.\u00a0 The final push up to Bwalch Ery Farchog is a bit steep in places but nothing too difficult.\u00a0 Once on the ridge, follow it to the left, NW along a fairly clear path.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-926 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5548-1024x575-1-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5548-1024x575-1-300x168.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5548-1024x575-1-768x431.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5548-1024x575-1-685x385.jpg 685w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5548-1024x575-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>There is a short section at\u00a0SH 692 635 that will require scrambling skills.\u00a0 It\u2019s not too difficult, approach it to the right then traverse along a small ledge to the left and up.\u00a0 Just after this section there is a fork in the path, take the right fork, although\u00a0 it looks steeper it\u2019s an easier path.\u00a0\u00a0From the crags of Craig yr Ysfa it\u2019s an easy stroll across Penywaun-wen and up onto the summit of\u00a0Carnedd Llewelyn.<\/p>\n<p>We set up the station in the shelter of the summit cairn.\u00a0 By this time the wind was up around 30 \u2013 40 mph and the temperature was well below freezing.\u00a0 I soon had seven contacts in the log.<\/p>\n<h3>GW\/NW-002 Log<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-929\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5c6d37ae03bb6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"505\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5c6d37ae03bb6.png 505w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5c6d37ae03bb6-300x87.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once we had packed up we headed back down to the ridge and on towards\u00a0Pen Llithrig y Wrach.\u00a0 The down scramble at the crags was no more difficult than coming up but care does need to be taken.<\/p>\n<h3>GW\/NW-013, Pen Llithrig y Wrach \u2013 799m, 6 Points<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1004\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1004\">\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_920\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-920\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-920 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5552-1-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pen yr Helgi Du<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure>\n<p>From the bwlch continue SE to gain the height of Pen yr Helgi Du.\u00a0 This is a quite imposing ascent that looks far more dramatic than it is.\u00a0 Keep your nerve and stick to the path up and you will soon reach the top where it opens out onto the flatter summit plateau.\u00a0 Stick with the path and drop back down into Bwalch y Tri Marchog and then climb the final ascent up onto\u00a0Pen Llithrig y Wrach.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1006\" at the summit we quickly set up the station and soon had four contacts in the log including a summit to summit contact with\u00a0GW7HEM\/P on Mynd Langorse which I was very pleased to get as SW-015 is well known as a difficult summit to activate on VHF.<\/p>\n<h3>GW\/NW-013 Log<\/h3>\n<p id=\"xkKxWuf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-922\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5c6d41275de6a.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"96\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5c6d41275de6a.png 508w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5c6d41275de6a-300x57.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By this time the weather was coming in and the wind was still ferocious so we didn\u2019t hang around on the summit but headed back down to calmer conditions.\u00a0 There is the option to just take a bearing down the side of the hill but the fence marked on the map was fairly substantial where we crossed it at the bwalch so I was not sure we wouldn\u2019t end up following it back North to the stile in the bwalch, rather we opted to follow the path back down and take a bearing from there.\u00a0 There is no obvious path ondown\u00a0from here\u00a0 but the dyke running West to East is very obvious and impossible to miss.\u00a0 There is a good path along the South side of the dyke leading back to the access road and down to the
