Mor Dearg &#038; Ben Nevis 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A forecast break in the Scottish weather coinciding with a rare free weekend afforded the perfect opportunity to bag two of the highest SOTA summits in the Kingdom and also a chance to tackle the impressive CMD arete.\u00a0\u00a0I headed off up the motorway on the Friday morning looking forward to a weekend of adventure.\u00a0 I was not disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>There are two obvious option for this route, either starting at the North Face car park, or from the tourist car park in Glen Nevis.\u00a0 The North Face start is probably a more pleasant walk in and perhaps a little easier, but as I was planning to activate two summits I couldn\u2019t be sure how late I would be coming back down.\u00a0 I chose the Glen Nevis start as it would be an easier return route in the dark.<\/p>\n<p id=\"nlpGuby\"><a \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-725\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View over the Loch at breakfast<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was first one down for breakfast on Saturday morning for the earliest possible start, it was not too far to the car park so I was on the hill by 8:30am.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/other-summits\/carn-mor-dearg-ben-nevis-2018\/img_5288-150x150\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1106\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1106\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5288-150x150-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>The initial trek up the tourist path was not as bad as I was expecting, it was busy but most people were very considerate and quite happy to move over and let me pass.\u00a0 On reaching the junction at Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe I turned off the main path heading North.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/other-summits\/carn-mor-dearg-ben-nevis-2018\/img_5294-150x150\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1107\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1107\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5294-150x150-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5294-150x150-1.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5294-150x150-1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>This path leads around the North side of the Ben below castle ridge and around to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smc.org.uk\/huts\/cic\">CIC hut<\/a>.\u00a0 After the melee of the tourist path earlier the solitude was most welcome.\u00a0 I passed one other walker doing the same route as me but the other way around.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/other-summits\/carn-mor-dearg-ben-nevis-2018\/img_5301-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1108\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1108\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5301-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a>On reaching the hut there is a fairly easy river crossing to reach the slopes of Carn Dearg Meadhonach.\u00a0 I had read some reports that indicated that there may be a path up here somewhere, but if there is then I didn\u2019t find it.\u00a0 The slope is steep but not too steep, it\u2019s mostly loose rocky ground interspersed with grassy heather, so easy enough to pick a route up it if taken with care.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_729\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-729\"><a class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carn Dearg Meadhonach with CMD in the background<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On reaching the summit of\u00a0Carn Dearg Meadhonach (not a SOTA summit) I turned South for a welcome and mush easier traverse down and then up again\u00a0 to Carn Mor Dearg.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_731\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-731\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/other-summits\/carn-mor-dearg-ben-nevis-2018\/img_5308-1-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1110\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1110\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5308-1-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carn Mor Dearg summit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Carn Mor Dearg summit was in the cloud when I arrived so not much to see.\u00a0 I soon set up the station beside the summit cairn and called CQ SOTA.\u00a0 I was soon rewarded with seven contacts including two summit-to-summit contacts.\u00a0 The temperature at the summit was below freezing and although not excessively windy I would estimate the wind chill at around -15 deg judging by how cold my fingers were holding the mic.<\/p>\n<h3>GM\/WS-003 -Log<\/h3>\n<p id=\"FZzyRnI\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/other-summits\/carn-mor-dearg-ben-nevis-2018\/img_5bbcb5ce6d3da\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1111\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1111\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_5bbcb5ce6d3da.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"509\" href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/other-summits\/carn-mor-dearg-ben-nevis-2018\/img_5311-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1112\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1112\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5311-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a>By the time I had packed up to leave the weather was starting to improve and I was able to catch a few glimpses of the CMD itself appearing from the mist.<\/p>\n<p>I set off along the ridge, it deserves it\u2019s reputation!\u00a0 I was fortunate that there was not too much wind so I was able to stay on the very top almost all the way along.\u00a0 At times it really does define what a \u2018knife edge\u2019<a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/other-summits\/carn-mor-dearg-ben-nevis-2018\/img_5314-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1113\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1113\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5314-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a>\u00a0ridge should be.\u00a0 The ridge proper extends for more than a kilometre until it reaches the SE slope of the Ben.\u00a0 The end of the ridge is marked by a cairn which also marks the last escape route to the North down Coire Leis.\u00a0 From here it is a relentless slog up to the summit of Ben Nevis itself.<\/p>\n<h3>GM\/WS-001 \u2013 Ben Nevis<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_736\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-736\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/index.php\/sota-summits-on-the-air\/other-summits\/carn-mor-dearg-ben-nevis-2018\/img_5326-300x169\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1114\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1114\" src=\"http:\/\/www.m1cje.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/IMG_5326-300x169-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-736\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The top<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There is a path shown on the map indicating the climb up Ben Nevis from the CMD.\u00a0 Don\u2019t believe it, the route is up a mighty great pile of loose rock, there is no clear path most of the way, just keep heading up until the slope eases off and you see the welcome sight of the summit structures appearing out of the mist.<\/p>\n<p>It was not as busy as I expected at the top, I guess many of those who set out in the morning didn\u2019t make it all the way up but still there were a fair few people around.
